Continued Heavy Rains in Kerala and Tamil Nadu Trigger Red Alert in Pathanamthitta

Widespread heavy rainfall continues to batter parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry prompting disaster management efforts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts significant rainfall over isolated areas of Kerala until November 24th. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered closure of all schools across seven districts including Tirunelveli and Nilgiris on November 23rd.

A red alert was issued in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district on November 22nd by the IMD. Consequently, District Collector A. Shibu imposed prohibitions on night travel and adventure tourism activities between 7PM to 6AM near hilly areas from November 24th to mitigate risks of potential landslides and localized flooding.

Sabarimala visitors have also been advised extra precautions given terrain vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, orange alerts were issued in Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki where heavy downpour has flooded highways. Rest of Kerala remains on yellow alert barring Kannur and Kasargod.

According to weather officials, cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu will likely trigger thunderstorms coupled with light to moderate rainfall over the next five days across all fourteen of Kerala’s districts barring Kannur.

In summary, authorities have stepped up vigilance and disaster mitigation efforts as Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry remain at risk of continuing heavy rain, landslides and flooding. Further rainfall alerts are expected from the IMD.
