Messi is determined and ready to do whatever it takes to win

Lionel Messi is consistently praised as one of the greatest and most humble footballers of all time. He’s often portrayed as an angel with a gentle smile, consistently creating beautiful plays without any boastfulness.

However, behind that image, Messi is also a determined competitor, willing to do whatever it takes to win. When wearing the Argentina national team jersey, he seems to transform into a different person.

Throughout his career, Messi has had numerous rough encounters with other players. Right from his debut for the national team at 18 years old, he was sent off the field just a minute later for slapping an opponent’s defender.

During the 2018 World Cup against Croatia, Messi pushed and kicked the leg of defender Strinic. He also challenged Uruguay’s Cavani to a fight, engaged in a brawl with Chile’s Medel. Most recently, he even cursed and refused to shake hands with Netherlands’ forward Weghorst after the 2022 World Cup quarter-final match.

Clearly, Messi becomes extremely competitive and hot-tempered whenever he represents the national team. All of his actions aim ultimately for victory for Argentina. Hence, his opponents need to be exceedingly cautious, avoiding any actions that might damage his self-esteem or provoke this superstar.

Perhaps it’s due to the excessive competitiveness that sometimes Messi’s true nature emerges – a demon always seeking ways to win. But regardless, Lionel Messi remains one of the greatest footballers in history.
